  1. Hello,
I am wondering if you can point me in the right direction.
My ancestor Franz Kroning (birth date 1840, somewhere in Prussia) is reported in his obituary in a local New Zealand newspaper as fighting, for Germany/Prussia, in the “battle of Koniggratz, and the more famous battle of Sadowa”.
I think the reporter has misunderstood they were the same battle – the newspaper is known for being more gossipy than factual. Or was there a second battle?
I am really interested in finding out even a birth date for this ancestor.
So I am wondering if you can tell me what websites would have military records from back then, or if those records still exist.
    Warm regards,
    Hannah

    1. Hello, I saw another message you had given someone to contact the museum of the Battle and I have now done so.
Thank you for sharing this information so freely.

    2. Hello Hannah!
Yes, the names Sadowa and Koniggratz refer to the same battle.
Since your relation was in the Prussian army in 1866 then I will look up details of who to contact in Germany and get back to you.

Thank you for visiting the site.
      Best Regards,

  2. Good afternoon,

I read your reply online to a client. “Austrian Empire had some strange recruiting areas as well as recruiting systems. ”

I am struggling with understanding if my 3rd Great Grandfather, Josef Fischer, served in the military or not? Or his younger three brothers. I understand that in the era of the Austrian Empire, a conscription military was in force, especially with surrounding battles in 1866, such as the Battle of Königgrätz. At the time, Josef would be 38 years old, and I read the mandatory age for conscription was between 18 to 45. Plus, a few exceptions were granted, but not to peasant-class farmers. So, although Josef had a wife and four children, I assume he would have to join the military. But I have found NO record of this being true.

I assume with the War of 1866 going close to my ancestor’s village (Český Šumburk) all males had to serve. Can you please help find records if they are in the army?
All brothers born at Schumburg #60. I attached their four birth records to maybe provide a clue.
Josef Fischer, Born 8 June 1828
Franz Fischer, Born 7 Feb 1836
Johann Fischer, Born 3 Mar 1838
Peter Fischer, Born 10 Oct 1840
Do you think you can help me?

    Very Respectfully, Dr. Randy Fisher

  3. Excellent work.
Are there lists (muster rolls?) of participants in the Austrian units, perhaps at the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna? Is there anything on line? I am interested in troops from Eastern Galicia, in the I, VIII, and X Corps d’Armee (infantry regiments 30, 15 and 77, and 10 and 24, respectively).

    1. Thanks for visiting the site Andrew,

The Austrian Empire had some strange recruiting areas as well as recruiting systems. Troops were sometimes mixed together depending on their ethnic origins; Slaves were put with Slaves, regardless of their country, making it easy for none commissioned offices who were recruited from similar areas to issue orders and train them, higher ranking officers being limited to German or French. This makes it difficult to find any exact details of units in various corps. Galicia, for example, being in modern day Poland, means that, although many Poles may have been recruited, there were probably many other ethnic groups filling up the ranks.
Having said that, I will try and obtain details of the Hapsburg areas of recruiting and get back to you.
If you would like to send me your email address that would be fine. Mine is:- grahammorris422@gmail.com
      Thanks once again,
      Graham

  4. My great x3 grandfather, Julius Gregor Constantin Wittig, had a younger brother, Emil Wittig, from Striegau , who was in the 6th Comp. the 1st Silesian grenadier battalions nr . 10. Emil was born February 17, 1844 and died on August 6, 1866 due to the cholera outbreak after the Battle of Koeniggraetz. I’m wondering if I can find out anything else about him or his military service. Thank you

    1. Hello Alida!

I will try and find some information concerning Striegau and the 1st Silesian Grenadier Battalion Nr10.
Please give me a couple of weeks to gather details. With the Christmas holidays fast approaching things are a little hectic at the moment!

Thank you for visiting the site.
      Best wishes,
      Graham J.Morris

    2. I will try some of my contacts in Germany but you may like to try a few of the military museums and archives in Berlin?

Much archive material was destroyed during the Second World War but maybe there are details still remaining ?

Thank you for visiting the site!
      Regards,
      Graham J.Morris

      1. Thank you for you reply and willingness to research this further. I sincerely appreciate your efforts and the suggestions!
